 UPWARD MOBILITY

ODOT’s staff of highly talented engineers maintain a wealth of practical knowledge and hands-on experience in the transportation engineering field.  Therefore, the EIT Program is more important than ever to prepare our future engineers and provide the necessary knowledge it will take to fill the future vacancies that will develop within our engineering ranks due to retirements within the next five to ten years.  Since 2000, over 90 percent of the engineers participating in the program have remained with ODOT, due to quality-of-life, competitive salaries, and excellent advancement opportunities and employee benefits.

ODOT’s Engineer-In-Training is a full time entry-level position introducing all newly hired engineers to the Transportation Engineer job classifications.  Upon the completion of the EIT Program, as well as passing the F.E. Exam, EIT’s are reclassified as a Transportation Engineer 1.  The Transportation Engineer structure includes six classifications, offering motivated professionals a lifetime of growth and upward mobility.

At the first three levels, employees specialize in roadway construction, planning, design, maintenance or testing functions, with assignments increasing in degrees of responsibility upon appropriate advancement.  Transportation Engineers 3, 4, and 5 act as supervisors or staff specialists.
